MyMedicare: what it means for you
key points
- MyMedicare is free and voluntary. You register your usual practice and preferred GP.
- Registering unlocks extra government funding your GP team can use to look after you better.
- Benefits include longer funded telehealth, plus bulk billed longer telehealth for children under 16 and concession card holders.
- There is added support for chronic conditions and for people in residential aged care.
- You can still see your GP without registering, you just miss out on these extra funded services.
MyMedicare is a voluntary registration system introduced by the Australian Government to strengthen the relationship between you and your regular GP. By registering, you nominate your usual general practice and preferred GP, which helps unlock additional government funding to support better, more personalised care.
What is MyMedicare?
It is a free, voluntary way to formally link yourself to your regular practice and preferred GP. Registering does not cost you anything and does not lock you in, but it does give your GP team access to extra funding to improve the services they can offer you.
Why register for MyMedicare?
Registering with MyMedicare means you formally choose your regular GP and practice. This gives your GP team access to extra funding to improve the services they can offer you.
Benefits include:
- Longer funded telehealth consultations, including bulk billed longer telehealth consults for children under 16 and concession card holders.
- Better coordination and support for patients with chronic conditions, helping reduce unnecessary hospital visits.
- For people living in residential aged care, more regular GP visits and improved care planning.
Additional benefits will continue to be introduced over time as part of the government's commitment to strengthening Medicare.
You can still see your GP without registering, but you won't be eligible for these enhanced MyMedicare-funded services.
